The How-To Column

A Beginner's Guide to the Art of Amigurumi

1

Gather Your Instruments

You shall require a crochet hook (size 3.5mm recommended), worsted weight yarn in your chosen palette, a yarn needle, stuffing material, and safety eyes. Quality tools make for quality work.

2

Master the Magic Ring

The magic ring is the foundation upon which all amigurumi is built. This adjustable loop allows you to begin work in the round with a tightly closed center. Practice until it becomes second nature.

3

Learn to Count Your Stitches

Precision in stitch counting is the difference between a shapely creation and a misshapen blob. Use stitch markers liberally and count at the end of every round without exception.

4

Work in Continuous Rounds

Unlike traditional crochet, amigurumi is typically worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join rounds or make turning chains unless the pattern specifically instructs you to do so.

5

Stuff Firmly but Gently

Add polyester fiberfill in small amounts, distributing it evenly throughout the piece. A well-stuffed amigurumi holds its shape beautifully; an overstuffed one shows gaps between stitches.

6

Assemble with Care

Pin all pieces in position before sewing. Use a whip stitch or mattress stitch with a yarn needle. Take photographs from multiple angles to ensure symmetry before making your final stitches.
